Do You Need Antivirus on a Mac in 2026? A Straight Answer by Situation
Short answer: not strictly, but most people are better off with one. A Mac with default settings is a harder target than a Windows PC, yet Mac malware is real, it is growing, and Apple’s built-in protections do not cover everything. If you only install apps from the App Store and rarely open email attachments, you can reasonably skip paid antivirus. If you install software from outside the App Store, share files with Windows users, use public Wi-Fi often, or are not confident spotting a fake download page, add a third-party layer.

Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Third-party antivirus? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Only App Store apps, careful with email, no shared files | Probably not | macOS blocks unsigned and unnotarized apps by default. [VERIFY against Apple Platform Security guide] |
| Download apps from developer sites, torrents, or cracked software | Yes | This is how most Mac malware gets installed: the user runs it. |
| Share files with Windows users or run Windows in a VM | Yes | A Mac can pass Windows malware along even if it is not affected itself. |
| Frequent public Wi-Fi, travel, or a shared household Mac | Yes, plus a VPN | Firewall control and traffic protection matter more here. |
| Kids or non-technical family members use the Mac | Yes | They are the group most likely to click a fake installer. |
| Work Mac managed by your employer | Ask IT first | Managed devices usually already have endpoint protection. |
What the independent labs say. In its 2026 Mac test (nine products, 1,500 Mac malware samples, April to May 2026), AV-Comparatives concluded that macOS malware is far less common than on Windows, but real cases exist and Apple’s built-in defenses can lag on brand-new threats. It recommends a certified antivirus as an extra layer, especially for non-expert users, children, and people who often try new software. All nine products were certified and none raised false alarms on clean Mac software. (AV-Comparatives Mac Security Test 2026, published 17 June 2026.)
What antivirus does not fix. It will not stop you from typing a password into a convincing fake login page, and it will not protect an account that is reused on a breached site. Phishing and password hygiene are separate problems, and one product below (Intego ONE) does not include web protection at all.
Mac Antivirus Compared: 2026 Lab Results and What Each Option Leaves Out
Lab scores come from the AV-Comparatives 2026 Mac test (macOS Tahoe, definitions updated early May 2026). Prices and gaps are filled in only where a source was opened.
| Option | Mac malware protection | Mac PUA protection | Known gaps | Price (1 Mac, first year / renewal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intego ONE (Essential / Advanced / Complete) | 96.7% | 94% | Lowest Mac malware score of the nine; reviewed version has no web protection against fraudulent sites; no parental controls | Essential about $29.99, then $39.99; Advanced about $52.49; Complete about $67.49 (first year). [VERIFY: Macworld, 8 Oct 2026; VPNPro lists higher figures] |
| Norton AntiVirus Plus | 99.9% | 95% | [VERIFY] | [VERIFY] |
| ESET HOME Security Essential | 99.9% | 94% | [VERIFY] | [VERIFY] |
| Avast One Free | 99.9% | 95% | Free tier. [VERIFY features and Avast’s data-handling history] | Free |
| Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac | 99.0% | 94% | [VERIFY] | [VERIFY] |
| Apple built-in only (Gatekeeper, XProtect) | Not tested as a product | Not tested | No third-party scanning or firewall rules | Free |
How to read this. A 3-point gap on 1,500 samples is measurable but not dramatic: all nine products received AV-Comparatives’ Approved Mac Security award and none produced a false positive. The higher-scoring products are better on the malware test; Intego’s case rests on other things, covered below. Kaspersky (100%) and CrowdStrike (100%) also scored top marks but are left out: Kaspersky’s US sales restrictions [VERIFY current status] and CrowdStrike is an enterprise product.
Product-name caution. Labs sometimes test a different edition than the one you can buy. AV-Comparatives tested “Intego ONE Complete”, “Norton AntiVirus Plus”, “Avast One Free” and “ESET HOME Security Essential”, while AV-TEST’s June 2025 test used “Norton 360”, “Avast Security” and “ESET Security Ultimate”. [VERIFY editions before quoting any score next to a price.]

Which Mac Antivirus Fits Which Buyer
Best overall protection score: Norton AntiVirus Plus, ESET and Avast are effectively tied
On the one 2026 lab test that included all of them, Norton AntiVirus Plus, ESET HOME Security Essential and Avast One Free each detected 99.9% of Mac malware, against 99.0% for Bitdefender and 96.7% for Intego ONE Complete. If raw detection is your only criterion, choose from the first group. [VERIFY price, renewal cost, device limit and web-protection features for the one you pick; add your own affiliate link if you have one.]
Not for you if: you need the most polished Mac-specific interface or granular firewall rules. [VERIFY per product.]
Best for beginners who want a Mac-only app: Intego ONE Essential
Macworld rated Intego ONE 5/5 for ease of use and called scanning fast, with a clear firewall and a plain interface (review updated 8 Oct 2026). The Essential plan covers antivirus and firewall for one, three or five Macs. [VERIFY plan names and prices at checkout.]
The trade-off to know before buying: Intego scored lowest on Mac malware detection in the 2026 AV-Comparatives test, and the reviewed version has no web or phishing protection. A beginner is the person most likely to click a fake page, so turn on Safari’s fraudulent-website warning and use a password manager. [TEST NEEDED: confirm with a safe phishing test page that Intego ONE does not flag it.]
Not for you if: you want parental controls, or one product that also protects Windows and Android devices.
Best budget option: Avast One Free, or Intego ONE Essential for a paid Mac-first app
Avast One Free matched the top score (99.9% Mac malware) at no cost. Free software is usually paid for in features or data, so read what it collects and which features are locked. [VERIFY: current free-tier limits, upsell prompts, and Avast’s history of selling browsing data, which led to a 2024 US FTC settlement.] If you prefer a paid, single-purpose Mac suite, Intego ONE Essential is listed at roughly $29.99 for the first year and $39.99 after.

Not for you if (Avast Free): you dislike upsell prompts or want a firewall with detailed rules. Not for you if (Intego Essential): price is your only concern, since a free product tested better.
Best for a Mac plus iPhone household on public Wi-Fi: Intego ONE Complete
Complete adds a VPN and an iPhone app. Macworld lists 51 VPN server locations on the Mac, and the iPhone app offers a VPN, a security checkup and a Wi-Fi security check, with plans covering 1+1, 3+3 or 5+5 Mac and iPhone devices. The iPhone app does not include antivirus or a firewall. This is the one use case where bundling can make sense, since you get a VPN and phone checks in one subscription. [VERIFY: compare against the price of a standalone VPN before claiming it saves money.]
Not for you if: you already pay for a VPN you like, you use Android, or you need an independently audited no-logs VPN. [VERIFY whether Intego VPN has an independent audit.]
Who should skip antivirus altogether
You can reasonably skip it if you install apps only from the Mac App Store, keep macOS updated, never run installers from email or messaging apps, and use a password manager. Your bigger risks are then phishing and account takeover, which this software mostly does not address.
Who should not choose Intego ONE
- Anyone whose top priority is the highest malware detection score available.
- Anyone who wants phishing or web protection built into the product.
- Anyone who wants parental controls.
- Anyone who needs one subscription across Mac, Windows, and Android. [VERIFY platform support: VPNPro says Windows only, no mobile app; Macworld lists an iPhone app in Complete.]
- People who dislike auto-renewal: the first-year price rises on renewal, so check the renewal price at checkout. [VERIFY auto-renewal and cancellation steps.]
Questions People Ask Before Buying Mac Antivirus
Can a Mac get a virus if I don’t install antivirus?
Yes. Mac malware exists, and AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test used 1,500 distinct Mac malware samples plus 1,500 potentially unwanted apps. Most infections need the user to run something, such as a fake installer, so the risk depends on how you install software.
Is macOS’s built-in protection enough?
For careful users, often yes; for everyone else it is a baseline. Apple’s built-in checks stop known malware and unnotarized apps, but AV-Comparatives notes they can be slow on brand-new threats and cannot catch every zero-day or fileless attack. [VERIFY Apple’s current names for XProtect, Gatekeeper and notarization.]
Is Intego ONE the best Mac antivirus?
Not on malware detection alone. Intego ONE Complete scored 96.7% on Mac malware in the 2026 AV-Comparatives test, the lowest of nine products, while still earning the Approved Mac Security award with no false positives. Its case rests on a Mac-first design, a granular firewall, and the Complete plan’s VPN and iPhone app.
Does Intego ONE protect against phishing and fake websites?
No, not in the version AV-Comparatives and Macworld reviewed. Both say it lacks web or phishing protection, so use Safari’s fraudulent-website warning and a password manager. [VERIFY on Intego’s current feature page.]
How much does Intego ONE cost?
Macworld’s October 2026 review lists Essential for one Mac at $29.99 for the first year and $39.99 afterwards, with Advanced at about $52.49 and Complete at about $67.49 for year one. Other reviewers list higher prices, so treat these as a snapshot. [VERIFY at checkout, including renewal price, 2-year option and whether the 35% promotion applies.] See current Intego ONE pricing.
Does Intego ONE cover my iPhone?
Only the Complete plan does, and only partly. It adds an iPhone app with a VPN, a security checkup and a Wi-Fi check, but no antivirus or firewall on the phone. Plans are sold as 1+1, 3+3 or 5+5 Mac and iPhone devices. [VERIFY.]
Will antivirus slow my Mac down?
It can, mostly during full scans. Macworld describes Intego ONE’s scanning as fast, while VPNPro reported noticeable CPU and memory use during full scans, so the sources disagree. [TEST NEEDED: measure CPU and scan time on your own Mac.]
Is free Mac antivirus good enough?
On detection, yes. Avast One Free matched the top Mac malware score (99.9%) in the 2026 test. The trade-offs are upsell prompts, fewer features, and how the vendor handles your data. [VERIFY Avast’s current free features and privacy terms.]
Do I need antivirus if I only use Safari and the App Store?
Probably not for malware, but you still need protection against phishing. The main malware routes are installers from outside the App Store, pirated apps, and malicious attachments, none of which apply if you avoid them. Antivirus will not stop you from entering a password on a fake page.
Can Mac antivirus detect Windows malware?
Yes, in most products, and it matters if you forward files to Windows users. In AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test, Intego, Norton, ESET, Avast and Bitdefender all detected 100% of the 100 Windows samples. The lab treats Windows detection as optional on a Mac.
